Dec 23, 2024 · The American Locomotive Company (Alco) began production on the S4 directly after the S2 in June, 1950. It was quite apparent that railroads preferred Alco's more powerful small switchers as both the S2 and S4 far outsold both the S1 and S3 by more than 1,400 units!
