The ALCO FA is a family of B-B diesel locomotives designed to haul freight trains. The locomotives were built by a partnership of ALCO and General Electric in Schenectady, New York, between January 1946 and May 1959.

This group is about all American Alco diesel locomotives and Canadian or foreign designs. Older Alco FA, RS, and switchers are now allowed here. Scale models are allowed. This group seems to be mostly about viewing photos and we need quality not quantity here.

Dec 21, 2024 · The Alco FA was intended to be the builder's answer to Electro-Motive's ever popular FT and subsequent models. The design was the road freight model of Alco's passenger service PA.

The FA-1/FB-1, which featured a 1,500 horsepower rating, was built from January 1946 to October 1950 with a 1,600 hp version produced between March and August 1950 (many early models were subsequently upgraded to 1,600 hp).

The Reading's Alco FA-1/FB-1 locomotives arrived on the property in June, 1948. Designated class DF-3 and numbered 300A/B through 305A/B, and were delivered in the same black/green/yellow paint scheme as the Reading's EMD FT cab units.

Jan 3, 2025 · Continuing its series of streamlined midcentury Alco diesel models, Rapido Trains is now offering highly detailed replicas of the Alco FA-1 and FB-1 freight locomotives for HO scale in multiple road- and era-specific renditions.

At the height of “Cab Units”, this was ALCO’s foray into the market. The “F” designation meant their design and usage would be best suited for “Freight”, although the FA and matching FB “Booster” unit could be seen in service almost anywhere.
