AL-KAFAN (SHROUDING THE DEAD MUSLIM) Shrouding should start immediately after washing and drying the body of the deceased. It is recommended to use white sheets from inexpensive material. Extravagance is not recommended in the Kafan (Shroud). All measurements may vary depending on the stature of the deceased.

The Kafan for the deceased must not be a usurped one, that is, unlawfully appropriated. If nothing else but the usurped Kafan is available, then the body must be buried without a Kafan. In fact, the usurped Kafan must be removed even if the body has already been buried, except in some special situations, which will not be discussed here. Rule 95

Similarly, if a woman is given a revocable divorce (al‑ṭalāq al‑rijʿī) – which will be explained in the section on the rules of divorce – and she dies before the expiry of her prescribed waiting period (ʿiddah), her husband must provide the kafan for her.
