SAM 26000 was the first of two Boeing VC-137C United States Air Force aircraft specifically configured and maintained for use by the President of the United States.

Bearing the unique call sign “SAM Two-Six-Thousand,” this aircraft illustrated the Air Force’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and comfortable air transportation for the president and other key personnel to locations anywhere around the globe.

SAM 27000 was the second of two Boeing VC-137C United States Air Force aircraft that were specifically configured and maintained for the use of the president of the United States.

Other aircraft designated as Air Force One have included another Lockheed Constellation, Columbine III; three Boeing 707s, introduced in the 1960s and 1970s; and the current Boeing VC-25As. Since 1990, the presidential fleet has consisted of two highly customized Boeing 747-200B (VC-25A) aircraft. [6] .

Towards the end of Eisenhower's term, in 1958, the Air Force added three Boeing 707 jets (designated SAM 970, 971, and 972), 707-153 models, into the fleet. "Ike" became the first president to use the 707 during his "Flight to Peace" Goodwill tour, from 3 December through 22 December 1959.

SAM 26000 is currently located inside the Presidential Hangar, National Museum of the United States Air Force, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, (1998).

President Reagan was a frequent visitor to the flight deck of Air Force One. The 90,000-square-foot exhibit hangar is the permanent home of the Boeing 707. During the John F. Kennedy administration in 1962, Boeing delivered the first of two customized Boeing 707-353Bs to the United States Air Force.
