Jul 15, 2020 · The sky bison living with the Air Nomads, specifically Appas species/subspecies/herd were wiped out with the Air Nomads. But Aang found another herd that survived and presumably domesticated them or bred Appa for Tenzin. But the Bhanti tribe also specifically took care of a herd in the fire nation itself.

Oct 20, 2019 · Each Air Temple probably has their own subspecies of Sky Bison, each very closely related, with a few minor, unimportant differences like different colored ears or thinner stripes. They’d all have the same ancestry, just adapted to the winds of each Temple, and the food and other animals in those regions.
If Appa was the last Sky Bison...then how did these appear? I
Oct 10, 2021 · He was the last Sky Bison I think. My understanding is that the ones that Aang found in the comics (and the ones in Legend of Korra) are Air Bison, which are a different breed, The brown markings are a different pattern and the fur is more tan than Appa's.

Humans, or other groups of them, pick up the other forms of bending from the original benders.
