Aigeira (Greek: Αιγείρα) (IPA:, Ancient Greek: Αἰγείρα or Αἴγειρα, Latin: Aegeira) is a town and a former municipality in northeastern Achaea, West Greece, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it has been a municipal unit of the Aigialeia municipality, [2] with an area of 103.646 km 2. [3]

At the Municipal Unity of Aigeira, near Palaiokastro hill at an altitude of approx. 300m, is the citadel of the Mycenaean city called Hyperesia (aka Iperisia, meaning Service). Ancient Aigeira (Hyperesia) was one of the most important cities of Achaea and of the Achaean League.

Aigeira, located high above the Gulf of Corinth, is one of the most important ancient sites in the region of Achaia in the north-west Peloponnese. Otto Walter, accompanied by the writings of Pausanias, undertook the first excavations here in 1916 and 1925.

The modern town takes its name from an ancient one, the ruins of which are mainly found on a hill about 2.5 km to the southeast.
