Aida (or Aïda, Italian: [aˈiːda]) is a tragic opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo 's Khedivial Opera House and had its première there on 24 December 1871, in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini.

Mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi, following her 2024 debut in Verdi’s LaForzadelDestino, is Aida’s Egyptian rival Amneris, sharing the role with Elīna Garanča, who returns to the Met for the first time since 2020.

It is quite possible that, acknowledging his fraught relationship with Verdi, Solera crafted the scenario for Aida —which itself bears striking similarities to that of Nabucco —and entrusted Mariette to present it to the composer.
