Santa Fe's 40 F45's, originally numbered 1900-1939, were delivered in June and July 1968. The locomotives were painted in an attractive variation of the 4-axle F-unit blue and yellow freight scheme, with yellow highlighting the windshield and a large yellow noseband.

They were purchased by the Santa Fe, Great Northern as well as Burlington Northern after the 1970 merger.
