The EMD F45 is a C-C cowled diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1968 and 1971. Power was provided by an EMD 645E3 20- cylinder engine which generated 3,600 hp (2,680 kW).

Santa Fe's 40 F45's, originally numbered 1900-1939, were delivered in June and July 1968. The locomotives were painted in an attractive variation of the 4-axle F-unit blue and yellow freight scheme, with yellow highlighting the windshield and a large yellow noseband.

Dec 16, 2024 · The F45 was the freight variant of the FP45, Electro-Motive's first model featuring the cowl styling. Manufactured at the Santa Fe's request, the FP45 was designed as both a dual service locomotive while also offering a simplified full-width carbody.

The 5960 was one of 20 F45's repainted in the short lived red and yellow warbonnet scheme for the proposed Santa Fe Southern Pacific merger in 1985-86. In January 1987, two years and two months after the previous photo, Gary Kluge again photographed the unit at San Bernardino, this time in SPSF paint.

The EMD F45 was one of the very first modern cowl-bodied diesel locomotives built for the North American locomotive market. They were purchased by the Santa Fe, Great Northern as well as Burlington Northern after the 1970 merger. The F45's cowl helped provide better protection for the diesel engine and actually made it easier to service for crews.
