Dec 18, 2019 · If you go to Multiplayer --> Lobby Browser --> Create Lobby, there is a drop down list for changing the server region. If you scroll to the very bottom there is an option to "Use Local Lan Server". I haven't tried it myself though, but it might be what you are looking for.

I figured out that "LAN mode" is strictly restricted to a common gateway network, you cannot play this game in "P2P" way, even with a VPN. You must share a common gateway, otherwise, it won't work. They choose to f* they customers in exchange of "piracy protection".

You can connect your laptops either with a wi-fi ad hoc network or a lan crossover cable (make sure it's a crossover cable, a normal lan cable won't work). Then you can connect and start a game with the in-game direct IP feature.
