It is the 3rd largest political party in Assam Legislative Assembly after BJP and INC. The party was founded by Maulana Badruddin Ajmal on 3 October 2005 and at that time, its name was Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF).

Rafiqul Islam is an Indian politician serving as a member of Assam Legislative Assembly from AIUDF since 2011. He got elected in 2021 with the highest margin of votes in the state of Assam from Jania constituency, he has also served as a guest professor in Gauhati University. [1]

In the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Ashraful's party, AIUDF, allied with the Indian National Congress, Bodoland People's Front (BPF), and CPI-M under the name Mahajut, which lost to the BJP's Mitrojut.
