The A701 is a major road in Scotland that runs from Dumfries to Edinburgh. The A701 leaves Dumfries and travels north to meet the A74 (M) east of Beattock. It then passes beneath the A74 (M) before continuing to the north-east towards Moffat and ultimately Edinburgh.

It rises and falls gently along its entire route and the wide vista is crowned with a view of the Southern Uplands. The A701 now begins at a traffic-light junction on the northern edge of the town centre, where the A780 turns off down Loreburn Street opposite the Dumfries Academy.

At one time, the A701 was the major road between Edinburgh and Dumfries. The southern section between Dumfries and Beattock is still a trunk road, forming the primary route link between Dumfries and the A74 (M) for northbound Glasgow/Edinburgh traffic.
