Prior to its withdrawal in 2016, the ASTM A325 specification covered high strength heavy hex structural bolts from 1/2″ diameter through 1-1/2″ diameter. These bolts are intended for use in structural connections and therefore have shorter thread lengths than standard hex bolts.

The most common heavy hex head screw, these steel screws meet ASTM A325 regulations for structural joints, such as mating I-beams and scaffolding. Material meets ASTM F3125 specifications for quality.

Below are the approximate minimum mechanical properties specific to a given diameter of A325 fastener. Below is a chart comparing the mechanical property requirements for A325 versus F3125 Grade A325. As you can see, the requirements are identical through 1” diameter, but beyond that, F3125 Grade A325 has a higher minimum strength requirement.
