Nov 10, 2005 · On the other hand, PLA knows the limits of 99A. The upgrade potential of 99A is very limited due to its (realtively) poor chassis/suspension reliability. That's also why 99A does not use side attached armor. So there is no need for an upgrade varient, just go for a …

Nov 10, 2005 · In January of 2019, the PLA has 1000 Type 96, 1500 Type 96A, 600 Type 99, 250 Type 99A, and 100 Type 15 in its active service. Considering the Type 99A has been in production since 2007, not a lot of it has been built. However, the Type 96A, which entered production one year earlier than the Type 99A is significantly greater in number.

Nov 10, 2005 · Okay 99A gets frontal protection well by pure brute forcing it with extremely thick (for Soviet/Chinese tank doctrine) armour then adding further layer of wedge modular armour and a layer of modern ERA on top. This is like twice T-90M's frontal but …

Nov 10, 2005 · The VT-4 seems like a downgrade from the ZTZ-99A to me; I don't know why the PLA would want to induct it. If the idea is to supplant 96As with VT-4s, there are flaws in that idea too.The ZTZ-96A is a low-cost, low-weight, well-balanced MBT suitable for the North, South and the Tibetan plateau which is why the PLA has continued its production.

Nov 10, 2005 · It is quite limiting. When PLA commissioned the Type 15 light tank (its most modern tank) notice how they stood well clear of this old carousel autoloader design. I have doubts the 99A can defeat M1A2 and Challenger 2 in pure frontal at longer distances. I have stronger doubts any cuurent NATO MBT can destroy 99A in pure frontal at longer ...

Nov 10, 2005 · I think the time to replace the Type-99A has come. IMO Abrams is a very good tank with the exceptions of its weight and fuel consumption. However I still find it funny how Americans on the internet were defending its every design feature like a religion and then we learned it will become a tank with an unmanned turret, autoloader, and a diesel ...

Aug 14, 2014 · According to my understanding Type 90-II, Type 85-III and Type 88C (maybe the first name of the Type 96, similar to T-90 with its first name is T-72BU) is used for exporting and developing into Type 96 (Type 96 MBT 2nd generation but bring the standards of the 3rd generation as the Type 98/99) MBT mainly used in the Chinese army (more than 2500 Type 96 variants and 600 Type 99), this is the ...

Mar 15, 2014 · A different armor package (note the slat armor). Perhaps an upgrade or for urban warfare? If they scaled up this design to the size of a 99A MBT, the PLA would actually have a decent tank for once. None of that carousel volcano that is common to most Soviet tanks.

Jan 6, 2014 · It's a pretty good tank, especially since a lot of Thai terrain and roads are unsuitable for heavier tanks (ZTZ-99A, M1A2, Leopard 2). Thats actually a very good point, wondering why Thailand didn't choose the lighter one like T-96A. It seems VT-4 has a better specs than T-84M

Nov 10, 2005 · For one clearly observable fact, PLA tanks do not use much side armour at all. pretty much anything anti-tank will penetrate PLA MBT side armour. It is literally about 10cm thick at an absolute maximum for the heavier ones like 99A. Compensated with very capable ERA for sure but this is revealing of their requirement specs and doctrine.
