Jan 21, 2023 · That heavy of cut might hurt the integrity of the head. Besides, the 96 heads are perfect for a 455, 462, or 468 build, and that's their highest and best use. A properly set up 96 head will perform as good as any other Pontiac iron head. The below 96's have RAIV length Ferrea 5000 stainless valves and matching Crane springs.

Jan 16, 2024 · Just bought a set of stock rebuilt '96' heads for a mild performance 455 build I am planning. Now looking for a good early 455 block and crank. Plan to run a stock or aluminum intake, Quadrajet, stock crank, .030 over forged flat tops, stock or aftermarket rods and perhaps a cam like the Comp 284 XE or something milder.

Jan 23, 2024 · All 6X-8 heads have screw-in studs. The limitation would be the small 1.96 exhaust valves and the restricted throats under the valve on the 6X-8's. I guess you could argue that both Edelbrock and Kaufman saw fit to use the small exhaust valves on their aluminum heads. Regardless, I'd still give a performance edge to the 96's in stock form.

Aug 23, 2009 · The 1971 #96 head and the '72 7K3 heads can be milled .070". Your '71 GTO, if fitted with the stock heads, should have about a 96cc chamber. So, if you mill the heads .050", you will have about 87cc's, good for about a 9.2 compression ratio. Know that a '71 GTO, if it still has the stock heads, will have the big valves.
