7 Up (stylized as 7UP worldwide) or Seven Up is an American brand of lemon-lime–flavored non-caffeinated soft drink. The brand and formula are now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper, although the beverage is internationally distributed by PepsiCo except the UK where it is distributed by Carlsberg Britvic, PepsiCo's designated UK distributor.

Charles Leiper Grigg (May 11, 1868 – April 16, 1940) was an American businessman. He is primarily known as the inventor of 7 Up, at one point known as 7Up Lithiated Lemon Soda. He invented the drink in October 1929. [2]: §2 Grigg became acquainted with the carbonated beverage business after moving to St. Louis, Missouri.

Early Development of 7 Up Around 1920, while Dr Pepper was growing in favor, C.L. Grigg, an advertising veteran of 30 years, had formed the Howdy Company in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was named for the Howdy orange-flavored soft drink Grigg had developed, but the CEO had other ideas--specifically, to invent a new flavor of beverage.

Charles Leiper Grigg decided to focus on lemon-lime flavors and and by in October of 1929 he had invented a new drink called, “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Sodas”. The name was quickly changed to ” 7 Up Lithiated Lemon-Lime” and then again quickly changed to just plain 7up.
