Sep 23, 2019 · it wouldnt make a lot of sense to me to keep the 7.62x51 case size and oal. to large/heavy. something in between 5.56x45 and 7.62x51 say.. 6.8x48 would seem just right.. or just use 6.5 grendel.. or 6.8 spc.. or .270 or many of the already proven cartridges out there..the ultimate win woudl be to make something with much better ballistics while still fitting in the m4 …

Apr 23, 2022 · I think this may change that. In the last few days there have been many articles on the new M4 and M249 replacement. Guess what, it is 6.8x51, (.277 Fury). Sig has the ammo and the caliber. I don't know who from Sig is sucking it for DoD, but they are doing a fantastic job since the M17, M18 and LPVO contracts.

The article compares performance of the 6.8x51 cartridge to .270WSM. Of note; “The Machine Gun weighs in at 11.97 lbs, while the Carbine is 8.1 lbs with no Optic or Suppressor.”
