Nov 19, 2024 · There is a myth that the 500i is fuel-inefficient. That is probably because it goes through a tank of fuel faster than other saws with similar fuel tank size. But I had an MS441C that would run 45 minutes on a tank. My 500i runs about 35 minutes on a tankful, but cuts more wood in 35 minutes than the 441C did in 45 minutes.

Jan 1, 2025 · As far as not getting a used 500i, unless you find a steal, you're better off getting new for the prices most are asking for used and the warranty, as it is more expensive for repairs, if there are any issues. So Used, getting a standard 462 would be the most "reliable" option, if you take straight gassing and physical damage out of the equation.
Help in deciding between Stihl MS 462 and 500i Chainsaw
Apr 11, 2022 · The 500i is a great saw, once you learn how to use it. The Fuel Injection has some minor starting issues when warm. They are a minor problem, once you figure it out, but until then can be frustrating. The 462 cost a bit less, but after a couple of weeks or months, who remembers. Get the 500i, learn to use it, and love the power.

May 11, 2022 · But the 500i has an RPM range above the 3/4 throttle point that develops the exhaust note into a sort of scream which is definitely at a hearing damaging decibel level. At least to this man's ears. So wear ear protection! I will in the future. The 500i even with the 32 inch bar, is several pounds lighter than my 041 super with a 25 inch bar. So...
Max Flo filter for Stihl 500I-Is it worth the money
Jan 24, 2024 · Pondering whether to put a Max Flo filter on my Stihl 500I. I do storm clean up work with charitable organizations like Samaritans Purse. Most of the tree damage is fairly recent, so pretty clean wood to work with some in the dirt on the outside like any other storm damaged trees. Always some...

Jan 13, 2025 · It has to be ran at high rpm and let it “self feed” by not putting pressure on the saw and forcing it through the cut. Let the chain do the work. It actually cuts faster this way and any pressure bogs the saw down and makes it cut slower. It’s a fast saw when cut like this. With a 20”-25” bar, the 462 can out cut a 500i.

Mar 10, 2019 · My 500i carry both 28" and 36" clearing blowdown trial trees. Skip chain only on 28". On this saw stock dogs you are short with bar length. 28 inch measure around 1.5 inch less.
Looking at either a Stihl 462 or 500i
Feb 24, 2011 · I may or may not sell the 462 for a 500i depending on how it feels in my hands. Both great saws, so if you needed something soon, a 462 is a great saw and will serve well. If you can wait and see how the 500i compares and what the 500i doing on the market does to the 462 prices, you might be able to save some money if you wait.
MS461 or 500i - Arborist, Chainsaw & Tree Work Forum
Jan 12, 2024 · The 500i is only one of the 4 saws that I purchased brand new and it's a Great saw, but I'm not gonna lie, I regret it. It's got Great power for the weight just like the 261, but for my application, even with the Stiffer suspension it's a bit wobbly with a 36" bar, noticably lower torque than and consumes fuel at the same rate as a 661.

Jul 28, 2022 · Brand new saw, probably only 10 tanks of gas through, saw has consistent starting problems after sitting for a bit after running time. First start of the day OK, not great, but I can get it going with about 5 to 8 pulls and lots of primer bulb. Not …
