Izapa Stela 5 is one of a number of large, carved stelae found in the ancient Mesoamerican site of Izapa, in the Soconusco region of Chiapas, Mexico along the present-day Guatemalan border. These stelae date from roughly 300 BCE to 50 or 100 BCE, [1] although some argue for dates as late as 250 CE. [2]

Izapa Stela 5, carved sometime between 100 BC and AD 100, portrays a large tree in full leaf, laden with fruit, and surrounded by several persons and objects, including water.

Stela 5 is recognized as the most complex stela, bearing the most important message. Some brief interpretations give an indication of the difficulty of determining its message. Keeler, writing on surviving tree of life customs, drew a reconstruction of the scene and gave the following interpretation of Stela 5 (see Figure 1):
