32 Winchester Special vs 30-30 Winchester - The Firing Line
Mar 17, 2017 · The .32 WS is pretty much a .30-30 chamber behind a .32-40 barrel. The .32-40 was, in single shots, a leading target caliber in the late BPCR-early nitro days. I recall a gunzine article where the author tested the concept of "smokeless factory load, black reload" for .32 WS. Smokeless powder shot about like you would expect from a lever action.
30-30 vs. 32 Winchester Special - The Firing Line Forums
Nov 5, 2015 · The 32 special was the same barrel blank, starting at .300" bore and was cut with .0105" deep rifling to better hold lead bullets and work with black powder. Original Winchester specs call for both bores to be .300, but the rifling in the …

Jan 19, 2018 · The .32-40 and the .32 Winchester Special cases have similar capacity; I believe the .32 WS case will hold a bit more powder. But, with black powder, a little bit doesn't really make a different in the round's ballistics. It takes a lot to get an appreciable boost in performance. _____
32 Winchester Special vs 30-30 Winchester - The Firing Line
Mar 20, 2017 · The SAMMI specs show the figures mentioned as well. Its interesting to note that the SAMMI specs on the 32 spl show the rifling depth as about 2 1/2 thou, versus the 4 thou depth of the 30-30. The stories of worn 32 spl bores not shooting as well aren't too hard to …

Dec 19, 2015 · I think the 32 WS was the better choice for the reloading hunter prior to quality commercially available smokeless powder. And by the way it's a bigger caliber too. It's probably safer to reload with black powder, right? Especialy back in those days. More forgiving, less chance of extra powder causing a blow up.

Marlin 336 carbine .32 Winchester Special - The Firing Line
Jun 3, 2014 · Gun Writer Dave Scovil did an article on this very subject in, IIRC Handloader Magazine. The reason for the .32 WS was the slightly larger bore was a tad more friendly toward black Powder and the 1 in 16" twist did not foul up like the 1 in 12" twist of the 30-30. Someone mentioned something about the accuracy going sour.

Savage Arms 32 cal. Lever Action Rifle - The Firing Line Forums
Jul 18, 2017 · "If it's a .32, it's probably a .32-40 Winchester. That'd be a guess though. The 99 came in .32-40 Ballard too." The .32-40 Winchester and .32-40 Ballard are the same cartridge. Identical. Ballard Arms developed both the .32-40 and the .38-55 rounds as target cartridges for their lever-action dropping block target rifles.
