radial probability distribution curves | atomic orbitals
Radial distribution curve gives an idea about the electron density at a radial distance from the nucleus. The value of 4πr 2 ψ 2 (radial probability density function) becomes zero at a nodal point, also known as a radial node. The number of radial nodes for an orbital = n- l -1. Where n = principal quantum number and l = azimuthal quantum number.

The shapes of the first five atomic orbitals are 1s, 2s, 2p x, 2p y, and 2p z. The two colors show the phase or sign of the wave function in each region. Each picture is domain coloring of a ψ (x, y, z) function which depends on the coordinates of one electron.
How is it possible to draw a radial wave function for the 2p orbital?
Oct 20, 2020 · What confuses me is the following graph of the 2p orbital wave function distribution. Since the 2p orbital is shaped like a tear drop, if you went a certain distance r from the nucleus, there would be areas that the tear drop doesn't cover (since a tear drop isn't spherical).

The fifth 3d orbital, called the 3dz2 3 d z 2 orbital, has a unique shape: it looks like a 2pz 2 p z orbital combined with an additional doughnut of electron probability lying in the xy plane.
The Orbitron: 2p atomic orbitals
For any atom, there are three 2 p orbitals. These orbitals have the same shape but are aligned differently in space. The three 2 p orbitals normally used are labelled 2 px, 2 py, and 2 pz since the functions are "aligned" along the x, y, and z axes respectively.

The graph on the left is a surface plot of ψ 2p on a slice drawn through the nucleus while the plot on the right shows values along a single line drawn through the nucleus. In this case the plot shows a 2 px orbital.

The Orbitron: 2p atomic orbitals electron density
Atomic orbitals 2 p electron density Animated plot of the 2p electron density function (ψ2p)2. The yellow zones are where the wave function has positive values and the white zones denote negative values. There are three 2 p orbitals. These have the same shape but are aligned differently in space.

Below is three plots showing what the 2p 2 p orbitals look like. What we’ve drawn here is a surface of constant probability. In reality, the p p -orbitals aren’t hard shells, as this picture would seem to indicate.

The explicit expression for the wave function of the 2p x orbital of the hydrogen atom is: ax*exp (-r/2) (‘a’ is a constant, take it to be 1). The expression for the density of this orbital is the square of it (you can look up the full expressions here).
