Then I went to the link ovenbird shared (Gourmet Slueth) and converted the size (length) of the bananas to mashed bananas and it said 1.35 cups - which was almost exactly what they measured after being mashed.

The bunches of bananas are small (but not too small) but they produce every year so this is the trade-off. Personally I like smaller bunches because when my Goldfinger gives me a bunch that weight about 40 lbs., that is too much to eat at one time.
