Jul 21, 2011 · 8 - 1968 is year built P - Pontiac, MI is plant where built 296731 - sequence number So the only part of the VIN that I am not totally sure about is the sequence number. I know the sequence started with "100000" which indicates that this is the 196,731st vehicle built. However there were only approx. 88,000 GTO's built in 1968.

Question on rear end size - Pontiac GTO Forum
Mar 2, 2014 · In a car magazine review of the 1968 GTO, it stated that the "new" 1968 GTO wide-track was 2" wider than the previous year. The track was 60" which makes the '67 at 58", and suspect the '66 as well. Now I don't know if some of this has anything to do with rim/tire size, which may add some.

Nov 20, 2023 · 1968 GTO. Last year vent window. Bezel lettering for dash switches and radio knobs were colored either white or black. There doesn't seem to be any particular plant or time period to ascertain which color was used. The 68 lighter did not have a plastic lettered bezel like the 69-72 models.
