In mint state condition, the 1793 Liberty Cap is the rarest of the three types of 1793 large cents (Chain cent, Wreath cent, and Liberty Cap cent). The PCGS graded MS64BN is the finest known by far.

The coin is called the “Flowing Hair” Large Cent because Lady Liberty is depicted with long, flowing hair. Arching overtop of Lady Liberty’s image is the word “Liberty,” while the 1793 year of minting is featured underneath.

The Liberty Cap large cent was a type of large cent struck by the United States Mint from 1793 until 1796, when it was replaced by the Draped Bust large cent. The coin features an image of the goddess of Liberty and her accompanying Phrygian cap.

The only thing likely keeping it from much higher prices is a greater appreciation for how tough it really is and the fact that unlike the chain and wreath reverse 1793 cents, the 1793 Liberty Cap is not a one-year type coin.

Of the three major types of 1793 cents including the Chain style and the Wreath motif, the rarest is the third – the 1793 Liberty Cap design. This issue, known in five die varieties, features superb engraving artistry.
