Nov 8, 2016 · This is exactly my evaluation N54 vs. N55 and I had DCT in my former '12 135i and now on the 2016 Z4. The N55 had a, IMHO, better exhaust note both pre and post PPK1. We'll see how I feel after tuning the N54.

BMW’s N54 engine was found in E90/E91/E92/E93 3 series, E60-E61 5 series, and E82-E88 1 series. N54 uses direct injection, double vanos and small K03 twin turbos for early spool and a naturally aspirated engine feel.

The n54 was BMW’s first direct-injected turbocharged engine. Instead of having the fuel injectors placed in the intake manifold runner like port injected engines, the injector is placed directly inside of the combustion chamber.
