By dialing 1-800-COLLECT, customers could connect with an automated MCI system which would directly place a call to a designated receiving party for a fraction of the cost of the AT&T service for its operator-assisted collect calling.

Later on services like 1-800-COLLECT showed up that were slightly cheaper. Sometimes I would call home and it would be like "you have a call from PLEASETAPETHESIMPSONS" and then my parents would reject the call and tape the Simpsons for me.

I used 1-800-Collect, but I used the "Bob, we had a baby it's a boy" method. Remember, we elder millennials didn't always have cell phones and didn't always have quarters for a payphone. Lol I also was old enough to remember beepers but too young to own one. The 90s weren't like now where every 8 year old has a cellphone.
