The Lake Michgian smelt run is typically between late March and the end of April. Smelt in Lake Michigan have declined dramatically since their peak in the mid-1980's. A half-full pail has been considered a very good catch in recent years. Last year, the catch was spotty, varying from evening to evening.

I have fond memories of all the people setting up campfires all along Point Pelee's lakeshore beach and going in with waders to scoop the little fish. Ton of fun as a kid!

Did you know that the Great Lakes make up 20% of the WORLD'S fresh water supply. Scary that tiny little fish are so loaded with mercury to the point you can't eat them!
