Museum Director Bob Ellis guides us through a run-up of the Air Zoo's P-40. Of particular interest are sounds peculiar to the P-47 exhaust system --- sharp cracks from the turbo waste gate coupled with a deeper, more mellow tone from the long pipe leading to the rear-mounted turbosupercharger.

A former World War II P-40 fighter pilot turned civilian test pilot named George S. Welch flew two possible supersonic flights in a jet-powered XP-86 before the Bell X-1 officially broke the sound barrier.

When fully loaded, the P-47 weighed up to 8 tons, making it one of the heaviest fighters of the war. The Thunderbolt was effective as a short- to medium-range escort fighter in high- altitude air-to-air combat and ground attack in both the European and Pacific theaters.

Aug 31, 2019 · Next came single-engine Curtiss P-40’s, two of which are in the museum’s collection, and the “Dottie Mae,” a Republic P-47 Thunderbolt that survived the war, only to crash days later into an Austrian lake, remaining there for 60 years.

The P-40 wasn't the fastest as you noted, his key was on maneuver and dogfights. I'm really proud of it and the team he worked with. However the P-51 mustang was one of the best fastes warbirds in WWII, and his sound was music for the infantry.

Only the F4U wasn't fitted with the Merlin so to my ears it was the only one that sounded really different. Yes some of the P-40s had the Merlin. Other p-40s had an Allison I believe. Check out Greg's Aeroplanes and Automobiles for an excellent video on the topic.
