The Oakland Latino Chamber of Commerce was established to support and promote Latino businesses. The OLCC is committed to creating a healthy business environment through collaboration, advocacy and economic development.

Between the 1910s and 50s, West Oakland became home to a thriving Latino community that was majority Mexican, many fleeing the Mexican Revolution, and included many Cubans, Central Americans and Puerto Ricans. Many of those Puerto Ricans immigrated from Hawaii after laboring in the sugar plantations there.

Sep 5, 2023 · During the 1950’s and 1960’s era of “urban renewal,” (the construction of BART and the Nimitz Freeway), countless African-Americans and Latinx were displaced out of West Oakland and into East Oakland, with Fruitvale being one of the neighborhoods where they were relocated.

Que Rico Nightclub and Restaurant located at 381 15th Street in Oakland, CA. As a well-known promoter in the LGBTQ+ Latin Community, Valentino has produced some of the biggest Latin Parties in the San Francisco Bay Area in addition to managing stages at Oakland Pride, San Francisco Pride, Sacramento Rainbow Festival, and Pride Night Great America.

All that remains visible of the original Latino colonia (neighborhood) of the East Bay are a handful of businesses in downtown Oakland: La Borinqueña, Mi Rancho tortillas, Mexicali Rose restaurant, among them. It is likely that only a few of their customers have an idea of their historical significance.

The Spanish Speaking Citizens’ Foundation was established in 1964 by a group of visionaries dedicated to improving our community for Latino residents in Oakland.
