Hermann van Pels (31 March 1898 – October 1944; [1] known as Hans in the first manuscript of the diary) was murdered in Auschwitz, being the first of the eight to die. Only a few scant testimonies have survived about the fate of Herman van Pels. It is thought that Hermann van Pels was murdered in the gas chamber of Auschwitz-Birkenau on 3 October 1944. In a statement issued in February 1961, the Red Cross said it considered Hermann van Pels to have died on 6 September 1944.

Hermann van Pels was born on 31 March 1898 in Gehrde, Germany. His parents were Aron and Lina Vorsänger van Pels. He had six siblings: Ida, Henny Marx, Gusti, Peter, Max, Meta, and Klara Neumann. On December 5, 1925, Hermann van Pels married Auguste Röttgen.

After their registration, the men, including Hermann van Pels, were sent on foot to Auschwitz I, also called Stammlager, which was located about 3 kilometres from Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II). [1]

In September 1944, Hermann van Pels, his son Peter, and Otto Frank were taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. He was assigned hard labor until an injury to his hand forced him to stop working.
