O município de Matipó está localizado na região II da Zona da Mata do estado de Minas Gerais e pertence à microrregião homogênea Vertente Ocidental do Caparaó (ICA/CETEC 1997). O município situa-se na bacia do Rio Doce, tendo como principais elementos da hidrografia o Rio Matipó e o Ribeirão de Santa Margarida.

Its distinctive features are its pale green to yellowish wavy-edged leaves and bright red stems on new growth tips. It is often mistaken for one of the pittosporum family, and is actually very similar to kōhūhū (Pittosporum tenuifolium, which is also known as black matipo), except the latter has black stems rather than red stems on new growth.

Common tree of regenerating and mature forest in coastal to montane situations. Often common on northern offshore islands.
