Authorities have publicly identified six people killed in traffic crashes throughout the county over the first few days of 2025, four of them on New Year’s Day.

First discovered: 4:55 a.m. Jan. 8 A new wildfire was reported today at 4:55 a.m. in San Diego County. Centre Fire has been burning on private land. There is no update on the containment progress of the fire and its cause remains unknown.

Re-elected San Diego County supervisors were sworn in Monday morning — with the exception of Nora Vargas, who decided last month not to serve her second term. Supervisors Terra Lawson-Remer and Joel Anderson both took the oath of office at a swearing-in ceremony at the County Administration Center after winning second terms in November.

Canfield Fire initially started today at 2:58 a.m. in San Diego County. It has been burning on private land for less than an hour. At this time, the containment status is unknown and the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Monday was the last day in office for San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas and a handful of elected officials are competing for her seat.

The county Board of Supervisors should approve a special election rather than a political appointment to fill the District 1 seat vacated by Nora Vargas, a candidate said Tuesday.
