For five consecutive days, wildfires fanned by strong winds have ravaged neighborhoods in Los Angeles, destroying more than 12,300 homes and buildings and leaving at least 11 dead. Fresh evacuations were ordered from Mandeville Canyon to the Interstate 405 freeway on Friday evening because of a flare up of the massive Palisades Fire.

Officials are working to cut off spreading flames before strong winds return, which could push the wildfires toward the J. Paul Getty Museum and the University of California, Los Angeles.

After firefighters made progress on Friday against multiple fires in the Los Angeles area, dry conditions overnight helped the Palisades fire grow by 1,000 acres — the blazes already consumed at least 36,000 acres in Southern California and killed at least 11 people.

The wildfires tearing through Los Angeles have taken lives and thousands of homes. But for many families it also has meant the loss of natural areas that had served as sanctuaries and learning spaces for local families,
