Under the Endangered Species Act, the West Indian manatee was considered to be threatened, but now wildlife experts are subdividing the group into two subspecies, each with its own unique designation.

“The center of those problems was in the Indian River Lagoon, where over the years, they’ve had these problems with all these algal blooms,” FWC manatee veterinarian Martine de Wit said.

The Fish and Wildlife Service proposal calls for establishing separate listings under the Endangered Species Act for two subspecies of the West Indian manatee, which now is classified as threatened.
