The odds of Asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting earth just changed again. This time for the better
Thursday morning, NASA announced that the odds of impact have been reduced to .28%. Those odds had been as high as 3.1%, the highest risk level ever recorded for a near-Earth object. Scientists reduced the probability of a threat to Earth overnight on Thursday after additional observations of the asteroid.
Dubbed 2024 YR4, the asteroid was first spotted on December 27, 2024, by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile. Based on its brightness, astronomers estimate it is between 130 and 300 feet wide.
