Google has officially updated Maps to label the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," following U.S. President Donald Trump 's executive order renaming the sea. Fortunately, the tech giant is also retaining the gulf's internationally recognised name which it has held since at least 1552 — at least, for non-American users.

The name change to Gulf of America is the first since the 1540s where various maps referred to it as the Mexican Gulf, Golpho de la Nueva España, and, finally Gulf of Mexico.

Map users in the U.S. will see the new name, while users in other parts of the world will see both when looking at the waters bordering the southern U.S.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly defended the name Gulf of Mexico, saying its use dates to 1607 and is recognized by the United Nations.

Apple Maps, Bing Maps and Google Maps have all changed their Maps software and apps to now display Gulf of America on the body of water that's been known as the Gulf of Mexico since the 16th century.

MapQuest's service has also refused to change the Gulf of Mexico's name, despite Trump's executive order last month to rename it as the 'Gulf of America.'
