Much of the UK has been shrouded in fog in recent days and the weather is having an impact as airports attempt to resume their normal flight schedules.

More than 1,000 flights were delayed at London Heathrow and Gatwick on Friday as fog created travel chaos for UK airports.

Chaos has hit Gatwick and Heathrow Airports, with scores of flights being cancelled and delayed due to heavy fog this evening (Friday, December 27). The Met Office reports that heavy mist will remain over Gatwick Airport until 6am on Sunday.

"Restrictions of this sort are only ever applied to maintain safety." A London Gatwick spokesperson said: "Temporary air traffic restrictions have been put in place due to fog causing poor visibility.
