The Dallas Cowboys have found their new defensive coordinator after hiring former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, the team announced Tuesday. Eberflus' hiring comes days after Brian Schottenheimer was hired as the franchise's new head coach.

The Chicago Bears have officially entered a new era after hiring Ben Johnson as their next head coach for the 2025 NFL season, but their previously dismissed leader — Matt Eberflus — has already landed on his feet again.

For Cowboys officials, Schottenheimer became the logical choice regardless of what others thought because of the continuity he brings to the position. Schottenheimer joined the organization as an offensive consultant in 2022 and served as the team’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

The Dallas Cowboys have hired Matt Eberflus as the new defensive coordinator and are expected to finalize a deal with Nick Sorensen as the special teams coordinator, according to multiple team sources to the Star-Telegram.

Dallas will need to find a new defensive coordinator for 2025, too. Mike Zimmer told Ed Werder that he would not return to the Cowboys and would likely retire.
