A final decision is nearing after Sundance organizers launched a bid process last year to consider a new home for the annual festival, which has been based in Utah since its founding over 40 years ago. Sundance has named three finalists: Boulder, Colorado, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Utah’s proposal, which involves both Park City and Salt Lake City.

Sundance is amid a process to decide a new location after a contract with City Hall to hold the festival largely in Park City expires. The selection process has been one of the overriding themes of the chatter throughout Sundance.

Sundance founder Robert Redford promised that audiences “can expect a 2025 program that showcases varied and vibrant filmmaking globally.” Running through February 2, the lineup includes more than 85 features and six episodic projects set to screen in Park City, Salt Lake City and online.

When Sundance leaves in 2027, attendees are weighing the pros and cons of the three finalists, Salt Lake City, Boulder, and Cincinnati.

The vision for a Colorado-based Sundance goes beyond just downtown Boulder. While the historic Boulder Theater and CU's Macky Auditorium would serve as main venues, the festival could stretch north to Estes Park's Stanley Film Center, pulling in another iconic Colorado location for the 70,000-plus attendees who flock to the festival each year.
