It was later featured in the high-performance 300 SEL beginning in 1968, though the M100, one of Mercedes' most influential engines, was cast to the sidelines when the car was axed in 1972.

The hand-built powerplant had a displacement of 6.3 liters in these models, though Mercedes increased its displacement to 6.8L for use in the W116 - the largest iteration of the M100 ever.
