The Japanese automaker is dusting off its pioneering EV and giving it new technology and a new form factor. The Leaf will return as a crossover SUV with a Tesla plug (!!), casting off its outdated appearance that previously led to rumors of its inevitable demise.

But compared to the likes of Kia, Hyundai, Peugeot and Citroen, Nissan lacks a modern line-up of both electric and hybrid vehicles that stand out from the crowd. Peugeot, on the other hand, offers nine EVs in Europe that include hatchbacks, SUVs, estate cars and vans.

It can be hard to remember in this Tesla-dominated media environment, but Nissan once sat at the front of the pack when it came to electric vehicles, back at the launch of the first-generation Leaf in 2009.
