President Trump’s directive to allow federal immigration officials to make arrests at public schools and houses of worship, traditionally safe havens for undocumented immigrants, prompted outrage and shock among the state’s educators and religious leaders, with some vowing to protect families regardless of the federal orders.

Federal immigration authorities will be permitted to arrest people and carry out enforcement actions in and near places such as churches and schools, marking a departure from long-standing policy to avoid so-called sensitive areas.

The Department of Homeland Security is following a directive that rescinds guidelines set by the Biden Administration that prohibited agents from going after people in places like churches where several people in trouble over their immigration status in Colorado have sought protection.
