A notably large brood of periodical cicadas will emerge from the underground across parts of the eastern U.S. this spring.

These cicadas, first identified in 1634, have lived underground for 17 years and are expected to spread from Georgia to Indiana.

The last time these thrumming, red-eyed bugs burrowed out of the ground across America's suburbs and woodlands was the early summer of 2008.
