Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro was recovering in an intensive care unit on Monday after a complex 12-hour surgery the day before, doctors at DF Star Hospital said in a news conference.

The conservative leader has been hospitalized since Friday due to a bowel obstruction related to long-term effects of being stabbed in the abdomen in September 2018.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized Friday in relation to a 2018 wound from when he was stabbed during a campaign rally ahead of his election.
