Former U.S. Rep. Mia Love of Utah, a daughter of Haitian immigrants who became the first Black Republican woman elected to Congress, died on Sunday. She was 49. Love had been undergoing treatment for brain cancer prior to her death.

She was 49 years old. Love was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2022 and had most recently been receiving treatment as part of a clinical trial. The former two-term lawmaker’s family had said earlier this month that Love was no longer responding to treatment.
