I will be visiting Siem Reap in Oct. I would like to visit Kompong Khleang for a morning boat trip along the river and then into the lake area to see the floating houses. I've not been very successful finding a tour that fills my needs. I cannot bicycle for miles due to bad knees (the most appealing tours are the bicycle tours, not for the biking but for the itinerary). I'm considering hiring a tuk tuk from my hotel. Has anyone ever done this before and if so, please provide some insite. Thanks

I would suggest you get your hotel to find tour/transport or a guide that will take you there. Tuk tuk is a long journey and very, very dusty. Definitely not a bicycle. we book our tour in our hotel and we got picked up and dropped off on time. our van was clean and driver/guide friendly and accommodating.
For those who went by boat particularly in Dec/Jan, were the waters calm? Was the boat safe?

Hi Sandymorr I went in November and the waters were definitely very calm - almost mirrorlike! If I am honest, the boat could have been safer - there were about 15 of us on board with only 3 lifejackets very past their prime. However the main thing that we found an issue was actually getting on and off the boat - this required walking up and down a fairly steep, but quite rickety ladder made of bamboo. Fine for the light and agile but heavier people might find this a bit difficult. My partner actually went through the ladder, and whilst he only got a small scrape, it could have been quite different. But in having said that it is an experience I would not have missed. Just take sensible precautions: take it slow on the ladders if you feel a little unsteady, and if you cannot swim and are concerned perhaps ask if you can have a lifejacket. Hope this helps
