There has been a theatre on George Street for almost 185 years. The first theatre was built in 1836, and a second in 1886. In 1908, the Dorrill family took over the venue and finally in 1934, the third Theatre opened; the ‘New Theatre’. Stanley Dorrill masterminded the rebuilding of the theatre as we know it today. He commissioned a new building from the well-known theatre architects William and T.R. Milburn of Sunderland. The Milburns developed the decadent art-deco interior with T.P Bennett and Sons, who also designed the Saville Theatre in London.

A fantastic evening with The Fast Show, but the venue had its challenges. The foyer was overcrowded, and accessing the balcony felt like a rock-climbing expedition with only one staircase. Once seate…Full review by jamessmith81

The comedy show itself was amazing so I can't fault that. However the seats were the most uncomfortable seats I ever sat in. I'm quite short and the seat left my legs either dangling or on tiptoe at …Full review by Terrikl

I will never go and see any singer in this theatre again. A great show ruined by a terrible sound system. Far too loud and screechy and we were far from the only ones to comment on it in the bar in t…Full review by TAMSIN G

I've been given a "recommended arrival time" that's an hour in advance of the show starting. Is it really necessary to arrive an hour early? I can't imagine why - it's not such a big venue.
A:
Hi Rob, I agree with Joe on this, I believe they recommended 1 hour as we were exiting the pandemic. We arrive 30 mins before the show which I feel was plenty of time.

I have seats in the stalls, right at the front and on an aisle, so I know I will have a lot of legroom. But I am also big and am so worried about not fitting in the seats. Can anybody put my mind at rest?
A:
I can't remember the sets being so small...we had plenty of leg room ! remember, this place is old & was built in those days when saving space & comfort was not on the agenda !
Q:
Has anyone taken their own drinks into the theatre, do they check your bags/ confiscate items?
A:
They have not checked our bags the last two occasions that we went, the last being September 2017.
