It pains me to write this. I am a tourist from Switzerland who went there two weeks ago with the simple expectation to ski on a volcano in the southern hemisphere. What bothered me was not the lack o… Full review by marnova01

Hi all, would anyone know what the roads are like during the season? Are they maintained frequently? Does it require snowchains? Is it best in 4WD or can I take my Sedan? Ive taken my car up Remarkables and Mt Hutt many times, but not sure if Turoa & whakapapa give updates on the roads. Any info would be helpful, thanks!

The roads are generally good, you would be advised at the bottom if chains are required. The shuttles also provide a friendly frequent service if you don’t want to drive

Kia ora Tina, Whakapapa and Turoa are around a 45 minute drive apart from each other and often the weather can vary between the ski fields so this is always good to check prior to travel. Turoa also has more park and freestyle facilities and features wider runs. Whakapapa features a larger learning facility and includes the Sky Waka gondola. Depending on your skiing ability, i hope this will help you make your choice. Please note if you buy a multi day pass, you can use one day at Turoa and another day at Whakapapa so you can experience both areas.
