The walking is on some cobblestones and there are stairs in curtain areas. It is beautiful though and worth a visit.

Could a 2019 traveller clarify how they transported themselves across to where those very old caves are. We are coming in to Matera in the morning from Taranto and only have the afternoon to explore.. But if we catch a taxi; what are we actually asking for? If we can catch a bus there in 2019, what are we asking for. Thanks.

The entire Sassi area is restricted to traffic. The only way to get a car into that area is to book a hotel that offers access and parking (at a price). Else you’ll need to find street parking …

The entire Sassi area is restricted to traffic. The only way to get a car into that area is to book a hotel that offers access and parking (at a price). Else you’ll need to find street parking outside the Sassi area and walk in (or get a taxi).
