Cortona is derived from Latin Cortōna, and from Etruscan šŒ‚šŒ–šŒ“šŒ•šŒ–šŒ. According to linguist Helmut Rix, ethnic in Etruscan was curthute, attested as a gentile in an inscription from Chiusi, in the province of Siena.
