The New Flyer Industries XDE40 is a diesel-electric transit bus from New Flyer's Xcelsior line. It was the first Xcelsior model and was launched at the 2008 APTA Expo. The first customer of the XDE40 was Brampton Transit in 2010 for their Züm service.

The New Flyer Xcelsior is a line of transit buses available in 35-foot rigid, 40-foot rigid, and 60-foot articulated nominal lengths manufactured by New Flyer Industries since 2008.

New Flyer Xcelsiors are one of the newest bus models ordered for NYCT and MTA Bus. Various models with different fuel types were ordered since 2011. Numbers are: 4810-4899 are 2011-2012 XD40 buses. These buses are part of the 40-foot Bus Test and Evaluation Program.

Used for full-load passenger testing by the MTA in anticipation of the delivery of their first XDE40 buses (9500-9509) Owned by Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority ( 1847 ), it demoed in MBTA colors February 2017 as it was diverted to NYC while en route to Boston for delivery.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority 9510-9619 are 2021 New Flyer Industries XDE40 buses built in 2020-2021. 9510-9619 is New Flyer's portion of the large hybrid-electric bus order the MTA placed in 2020, following the analysis of the results of the Allison and BAE hybrid systems tested in 9500-9509.

Nov 10, 2024 · In November 2021, SEPTA approved the purchase of 220 New Flyer XDE40 hybrid buses, with an additional 120 buses being confirmed to arrive with the FY2024 budget. The first of these 340 buses arrived on SEPTA property in November of 2022.
